Work hours in 2026

2,000 hours

261 weekdays − 11 federal holidays = 250 workdays; × 8 h = 2,000 h, 80 h fewer than 2,080.

2026: 261 weekdays − 11 holidays = 250 days = 2,000 h

RuleWeekdays minus the federal holidays (5 U.S.C. 6103) on OPM’s observed dates, 2025–2029; 2,080 hours = 52 × 40Sources checked How the math works ↓

New Year’s Day 2028 (Jan 1, 2028) falls on a Saturday. OPM lists its observed date as Friday, December 31 (2027) in the 2028 schedule, so calendar year 2027 contains 12 observed federal holidays and calendar year 2028 contains 10 (no January date).

Not modeled — holiday dates for 2030 and later (and before 2025) are not in our data yet (checked Oct 22, 2026).

How the math works

  1. Count the weekdaysEvery Monday to Friday from January 1 to December 31. A year has 261 or 262 of them (2026: 261).
  2. Take off the observed federal holidays that fall on weekdaysObserved dates, so a Saturday holiday counts on the Friday before. 2026 has 11; 2027 has 12. New Year’s Day 2028 (Jan 1, 2028) falls on a Saturday. OPM lists its observed date as Friday, December 31 (2027) in the 2028 schedule, so calendar year 2027 contains 12 observed federal holidays and calendar year 2028 contains 10 (no January date).5 U.S.C. 6103 - Holidays (U.S. Code, 2024 ed.) · Federal Holidays
  3. Multiply by the hours in a workday2026: 250 days × 8 h = 2,000 h. 2027: 249 × 8 = 1,992 h.
  4. The 2,080-hour convention2,080 = 52 weeks × 40 hours. It ignores holidays and the extra weekday most years have, so it is a pay convention, not a count of real workdays.29 CFR 778.113
  5. Federal employees: 2,087For most federal civilian employees, OPM computes hourly rates as annual basic pay / 2,087 hours (5 U.S.C. 5504(b)), rounded to the nearest cent. 2,087 is the 28-year average of work hours per calendar year. Use it only for a federal-employee mode, not for private payroll.Fact Sheet: Computing Hourly Rates of Pay Using the 2,087-Hour Divisor

What this doesn’t cover

  • Your employer’s holidays: Federal employees’ pay and leave only. Private employers are not required by federal law to give or pay holidays. Subtract your own paid days off from the workdays.
  • State holidays and vacation: Not in our data. Each one you take off is one workday (and one day of hours) fewer.
  • Years after 2029: Not modeled — the holiday data covers 2025–2029 (checked 2026-10-22).
