Days that are not business days

Sundays always; Saturdays unless you tick the box below.

OPM’s observed dates, 2025–2029. A holiday on a Saturday is observed the Friday before. The Federal Reserve Banks’ calendar differs: they stay open on that Friday, so a bank’s business days can differ from this count.

Any day your workplace is closed (a state holiday, a shutdown): add each one.

How the math works

The calculator walks the calendar one day at a time. It never estimates with “5 out of 7 days”.

  1. A business day is a Monday to Friday that is not a holidaySaturdays and Sundays are skipped (tick “Count Saturdays” for a six-day week). So is every observed federal holiday and every closed date you add.
  2. The 11 federal holidaysNew Year’s Day, January 1; Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., third Monday in January; Washington’s Birthday, third Monday in February; Memorial Day, last Monday in May; Juneteenth National Independence Day, June 19; Independence Day, July 4; Labor Day, first Monday in September; Columbus Day, second Monday in October; Veterans Day, November 11; Thanksgiving Day, fourth Thursday in November; Christmas Day, December 25.5 U.S.C. 6103 - Holidays (U.S. Code, 2024 ed.)
  3. Weekend holidays move to a weekdayFor federal employees on a Monday-Friday schedule: a holiday on Saturday is observed the preceding Friday (5 U.S.C. 6103(b)(1)); a holiday on Sunday is observed the following Monday (Executive Order 11582, sec. 3(a), as stated by OPM). OPM: “the holiday usually is observed on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday).”5 U.S.C. 6103 - Holidays (U.S. Code, 2024 ed.) · Federal Holidays
  4. Adding N business daysThe start date is day 0. Step one calendar day forward (or back, to subtract) and count each business day; the Nth one counted is the answer. Example: Mon, Nov 23, 2026 + 30 is Thu, Jan 7, 2027, after skipping Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
  5. Counting between two datesBy default the start date is not counted and the end date is: Monday to Friday of one week is 4 business days. Tick both boxes to count both ends: Nov 23, 2026 to Dec 31, 2026 is then 27.
  6. A holiday can sit in the year beforeNew Year’s Day 2028 (Jan 1, 2028) falls on a Saturday. OPM lists its observed date as Friday, December 31 (2027) in the 2028 schedule, so calendar year 2027 contains 12 observed federal holidays and calendar year 2028 contains 10 (no January date). So Thu, Dec 30, 2027 + 1 business day is Mon, Jan 3, 2028.Federal Holidays

What this doesn’t cover

  • Bank and Federal Reserve calendars: When a holiday falls on a Saturday, federal offices close the Friday before, but the Federal Reserve Banks stay open that Friday. A payment or settlement deadline can therefore land on a different day. Check your bank’s own calendar.
  • State and local holidays: State holidays (and city or county ones) are not in our data. Add them as closed dates.
  • Your employer’s holidays: Federal employees’ pay and leave only. Private employers are not required by federal law to give or pay holidays. Your employer may close on other days too; add those as closed dates.
  • Years outside 2025–2029: Not modeled — holiday dates for other years are not in our data yet (checked 2026-10-22). Weekends are still skipped and the result says so.
  • Inauguration Day: Inauguration Day (DC-area federal employees only) is left out.
  • Court and legal deadlines: Courts and agencies set their own rules for counting deadlines. Follow the rule that applies to your deadline.
